Lessons Learned #1

As I enter my fourth 6 week stint on my weight loss journey, I find myself more than half way to my goal.  I know that the pounds will get progressively more difficult to shed and I wanted to take a look at the things that have allowed me to be so successful.  These are my "Lessons Learned" and  I hope they can help you on your own life journey.

#1: Change will only happen when you're READY
Whenever I have lost a lot of weight, I have just done it.  When I've been really successful and committed, it has always been "OK, me, make this change right now."  It's almost like a religious conversion.  The spirit just moves you into submission and you give yourself over.  I have found that when I plan for change, I'm generally hedging my bets, stalling, and holding on to the belief the change is not necessary.  Change isn't easy because even in destructive behavior there is a certain level of benefit to us.  As an over eater, I felt experience comfort, relief, even euphoria from eating food and binging.  Food was constant and dependable.  It was familiar to me and it's hard to let go of the familiar and step into the unknown.

You have to be ready to take that step; to willingly venture into the hazy, uncertain world of weight loss, where the lure of old habits, failure and misteps coexist with new beginnings, success and lessons learned.

  1. Being "ready": Now that's a kettle of fish. In some sense, the whole thing may be about how you get ready. Tell us about what made you ready--that too could be a lesson for others.
